My sister HATES it when I recommend a book to her and she doesn't realize it is a series until after she has read it and became invested. She blames me for not warning her. I will submit that she has a point, but if I warned her in advance she would miss out on the great book! But I do sympathise, it seems to be a YA (and Adult) fiction epidemic. I once heard an author state that her publisher wouldn't sign unless she promised a trilogy. The torture isn't reading 3 books, it is waiting years in between books to know what happens next. By then I've totally forgotten the original plot and either have to re-read or move on and not continue. I have not one but three 'to buy' book lists. One of them is solely a list of sequels I am waiting to be released. It is a part time job keeping track. But every addiction has it's prices, and this is one that a bibliophile must push through.
Well that being said, a few part II, books came out this month.
The first is the Lunar Chronicles. I went to the book signing for the first book, and met the author. It was fun hearing her writing process and her ideas for the series. Cinder is a Cyborg living in New Beijing. This is post WW4. Where the evil Queen rules on the moon with the Lunars, and the Earthens are going through a new plague. The story line follows quite closely to the Cinderella story, except that she is a Cyborg, and she is a well known mechanic. Prince Kai, the item left behind on the steps, the evil stepmother it is all there. I had a lot of fun reading this book, I love fairy tale retelling and this was a fresh take, SyFy futuristic Cyborg. Cinder was a full of character and you definitely rooted for her. THEN along comes Scarlet from France. Wears a red hoodie, lives with her granny, and gets involved with a fella with very distinct wolfish characteristics. Cinder is still the main character, but their stories intertwine. They need each other to defeat the evil queen. Book 3 is about Rapunzel in Africa, and book 4 will be Snow White in the northern countries. I enjoyed book 2 as much as book one, but found it was a little more violent with all the 'wolf' attacks. Now the waiting game for book 3.
The next series was just a random find for me while perusing the Kings English bookstore. I read the first book and remember enjoying it enough to read the second, but I found myself quite involved in the second one. That's not usually the case, maybe the author hit her stride in the second. The author is German, so these are translations. Ruby Red is about Gwen, who comes from a family who has a 'time traveling' gene. They always thought it was her cousin who had the dominate gene and would be the time traveler. So while her cousin grew up training for when she came of age, Gwen just lived a normal teen age life. But her mother had lied about her birthday, and when the time came Gwen found herself unprepared as she started randomly traveling back in time. Thrown in to the family mysteries and drama she is given a crash course in her new life. Of course there is the handsome boy who helps her and gives her mixed messages to make it fun. The family is in turmoil trying to fulfill prophesies, but her mom is hiding something and the last time traveler disappeared with the compass, and Gwen is sent to fetch it. It was funny, with a little bit of mystery. and again the waiting game begins.
